✏️Week two of remote learning ✏️

14th January 2021 By catrionapowell

The end of our second week of learning remotely has ended with snowy scenes, just like the one in the picture. The picture was done by the artist Norman Cornish. In Year Two we have been learning about his life and we have been looking at his pictures.  We then looked out of our window to draw our own pictures in the style of Norman Cornish. Miles and Imogen sent me some wonderful pictures.

In our English lessons we have been identifying adverbs then we have used our own adverbs in sentences. Finally on Thursday we wrote stories using adverbs, correct grammar and punctuation. What fantastic stories we had from Year Two! Some children used a book they had read to give them ideas, such as Jessica. She had read the book by Dr Suess called ‘If I ran the zoo’ and included some ideas in her writing.
Some children used the space theme from our class text ‘The way back home’ such as Imogen.
I received so many fabulous stories by email that there isn’t room for them all in this blog. But I would like to say how proud I am of all the Year Two children, as they have again worked so hard at home this week. Also the children of key workers who have been in school have worked so hard too, you have  all really impressed myself, Miss Ho and Mrs Troy.

Thank you Year Two and well done!

From Mrs Phillips

A different start to a new year.

7th January 2021 By catrionapowell

First I would like to say how proud I am of all the learning achieved this week by the children in Year Two. Even though most of you have just seen me on the screen, you have listened, learnt and produced work that I can’t wait to show on this blog.

We have been using conjunctions in our English lessons and this work by Miles shows how he has used the conjunction ‘when’ in his sentences.

After our Science lesson I  received some wonderful writing from Martha C. about an extraordinary scientist called Katherine Johnson, who was a gifted mathematician. She worked for N.A.S.A. and her work was instrumental in the success of space flights. Martha even illustrated her work with little pictures.

In our Art lesson we learnt  about a local artist called Norman Cornish, who really wanted to sketch but wasn’t allowed to join a sketching club when he was young. The sketching Year Two completed was of animals. The first detailed drawings are by Imogen, which are great!

The second wonderful drawing is by Miles, he has even coloured it in and added his own art work.

I also heard that lots of Year Two children joined Mr Prince for his whole school P.E. lesson on Wednesday.

Across the curriculum Year Two children have started the new term with some great learning.
Well done Year Two and a huge thank you to your parents, for all the support they are giving you at home.

What a fantastic week in Year Two!

17th December 2020 By catrionapowell

What a fantastic week we have had in Year Two! On Tuesday we went to see the Winter Wonderland which was fabulous. We saw a reindeer, toasted marshmallows, drank creamy hot chocolate and then met Santa.  He showed us all how his magic key works and he said he was getting ready to deliver Christmas presents.

Then on Wednesday we had our Christmas party, we played lots of games and had some delicious food.

On Thursday we watched a great pantomime – oh yes we did!

We have all made some beautiful Christmas cards showing the true meaning of Christmas.

Year Two would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas!

Friday 11th December

11th December 2020 By catrionapowell

This week we have been making Christingles and we have been learning about what each part represents.

We then planned a lovely liturgy for the end of our R.E. topic about preparing for Christmas.

At the beginning of Advent we each wrote a prayer and we put them onto our own class Advent calendar. Each day we read out a prayer and it is quite exciting to see whose prayer it is going to be for that day.

We had a great day on Thursday when we came to school wearing our Christmas jumpers. Then at lunchtime we had our school Christmas dinner. We would like to say a huge thank you to all the kitchen staff for making such a delicious meal which we all really enjoyed.

🗺Putting Lanchester on the map 🗺

26th November 2020 By catrionapowell

This week in Geography we have been using maps to find Lanchester. We played a map game first by using a key and asking our partner to name the county, we all enjoyed looking at all of the different counties in the United Kingdom. Then we found the county which Lanchester was in, which was Durham. Finally we located and labelled Lanchester.

Our class text in English this week had a setting in an art gallery where a missing eyebrow and a caterpillar were involved in a detective story. It was a very funny book and everyone enjoyed it.

We then planned and wrote our own stories about a missing eyebrow. We had lots of different characters, lots of different art galleries and lots of great adjectives and connectives were used correctly.

For our reading comprehension work we had to read an excerpt from Charlie and the chocolate factory by Roald Dahl then answer lots of questions. We even had to imagine what chocolate delight was behind the oven door.
We have had lots of fun learning in Year Two this week.

🧦Odd Socks for kindness

19th November 2020 By catrionapowell

On Monday we started the week wearing odd socks to remind us to be kind to others, the world and ourselves. We then wrote a recount of what had happened on Friday for Children in Need Day. Again we had come to school wearing different clothes, there were lots of spots and lots of Pudsey Bears. Year Two also did some great dancing on the spot in the afternoon.

On Tuesday we started to read our new class text, about some giants being unkind to other people and the environment, by spoiling a forest. At the end of the week we wrote our own stories about our own characters that stopped the giants. The giants all turned into the nicest giants you would ever hope to meet.

In geography we have been identifying parts of the United Kingdom.

We found out that Edinburgh castle was built on an extinct volcano 🌋. We then had a virtual tour of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. We identified lots of landmarks in London such as Big Ben. Our reading groups are named after different landmarks in London so it was great to actually see them.

📝All Saints’ Day Research and Writing📝

5th November 2020 By catrionapowell

What great research Year Two children did over the half term holiday! This research about their Saint was used in our English lessons to plan some non- fiction writing. Because the children shared their information they were able to write lots of sentences. Everyone started their writing explaining about All Saints’ Day which was on November 1st, then wrote lots of facts about their particular Saint.

Then on Thursday November 5th we had our own virtual firework display in Year Two. We used adjectives in our senses poems to describe the fireworks and the bonfire.

In Maths we have been working on number bonds and comparing  numbers.

We have continued sculpting in our Art lessons, this time in the style of Eva Rothschild, who liked to produce abstract sculptures.

We used straws and play-dough to make our sculptures.

Well done Year Two, a very productive week!

🪐 Aliens have invaded Year 2🪐

8th October 2020 By catrionapowell

What a colourful invasion of aliens in Year Two! After starting to read our new book about Bob,  who is the man on the moon, the aliens appeared in Year Two. We are all looking forward to finding out about  how Bob keeps the moon clean and tidy. But we are wondering  how the aliens managed to get to Earth.

We have used adjectives to describe what we saw on the first page of our new book.

We made the aliens  in our art lesson in the style of Michelle Reader. As an artist she likes to make sculptures using recycled materials. She made this jaguar from re-cycled satellite dishes and old remote controls.

In maths we have been working on our multiplication tables after completing some  great homework using Rock Stars.

✋🏻Sculptures in Year Two✋🏻

1st October 2020 By catrionapowell

This week we have been looking at work by the artist Marc Quinn who uses different materials to make his sculptures. He used bread to sculpture his hand, but we decided to use salt-dough,  so our sculpture would last longer and not go mouldy. Everyone made some great sculptures but Eliza and Elayna- Rae made their sculptures very life-like.

The book we have been reading this week in our English lessons is by the author Julia Donaldson who also wrote the Gruffalo. We all wrote a book review and you can read Martha’s book review in this week’s newsletter.

In Maths we have been looking at arrays and making our own arrays of the two times table.

What a great week in Year Two!

Friday 25th September

24th September 2020 By catrionapowell

What fantastic lighthouses!
Year Two have been very busy this week finishing off making their lighthouses. They then started to evaluate their designs, they identified what went well and what they would change next time.

Well done Year Two!

On Monday in R.E. which was International Peace Day 2020, Year Two wrote their own Psalm about peace in the world that God had created.

In Maths we have been looking at equal groups. Some children have even completed challenges to find out if you can make equal groups from odd or even numbers.

In English we have been writing about a real life experience as a diary entry. We then read a great book about a bus called Billy, who comes to the rescue and takes lots of children on a trip around London. We recognised a lot of important places, because we have been learning about the Great Fire of London in our history lessons. We then wrote our own stories sequencing sentences.
