OS maps

26th November 2020 By francesstephenson

This week, the children have been focussing a lot on our new Geography topic, ‘Locational and Place Knowledge’. Within this topic, we have been exploring OS maps. We started off by learning about the different symbols that are often used on OS maps using a map key to help us. Next, we practised reading a map using a four figure grid reference to help us locate different objects and co-ordinates on a treasure map. Using all of this knowledge, we took a closer look at Lanchester on an OS map. We used co-ordinates to help locate Lanchester and our knowledge of OS symbols to locate different things such as our school and other schools in our local area, All Saints’ Church, The Post Office and the library. Mrs Patterson also very kindly shared her expertise by bringing in a range of OS maps of different areas to help the children to understand other elements and scales of OS  maps. We will use these to help us measure distances using a particular scale. The children have loved this topic so far!

Traction Man is Here!

26th November 2020 By francesstephenson

This week we have looked at the story ‘Traction Man is Here’ by Mini Grey. Throughout the story, Traction Man rescues his friends from difficult situations. He saves the buried dolls from Wicked Professor Spade and he saves the spoons from the dusty cloud made by Broom. But who will help Traction Man when they story ends like this…?

Reception have some ideas…

Poppy thinks “Traction Man might throw a bath bomb and it will fizz and frighten the scissors away. The scissors get sad, the fizz in his eyes. The end.”

Dana suggests “He’s going to be saved by a princess. The princess is going to throw a rock at the shark.”

Arlo R thinks Traction Man’s friends are going to come to his rescue. Arlo listened very carefully to the sounds he could hear in the words and labelled his picture independently!

Anti-Bullying Week

19th November 2020 By francesstephenson

Year 3 focussed on a reading comprehension this week to understand more about anti-bullying week. We learnt that this year’s theme is ‘united against bullying’ and we discussed all of the different types of bullying and what we should to do help prevent it. The children also watched a short film called ‘for the birds’ which was all about how everything and everyone is different and to celebrate the fact that nobody is the same. We then created lovely jigsaw pieces with ways in which we can help put a stop to bullying.

Anti-Bullying Week

19th November 2020 By francesstephenson

We enjoyed wearing our odd socks on Monday! We learned all about why we had to wear odd socks and discussed the importance of ‘treating others how you would like to be treated’.

We passed two apples around the circle. We passed the first apple ever so gently and said kind things to it as we did so.  We threw the second apple to each other carelessly and laughed at it. We noticed that both apples looked the same on the outside. We cut them open to see that the one we were not kind to was bruised inside.

We also talked about how it was okay to be different, just like Elmer. Our differences should be respected.

We coloured in pictures of Elmer and although they all looked the same before we coloured them, they all became as unique as we are!

Children in Need

13th November 2020 By francesstephenson

What a fun day Year 3 have had today! We kick started our afternoon by showing off our dance skills (we do have some very groovy dancers!). We then used our maths skills to solve the addition and subtraction Pudsey mosaics and finally we decorated gingerbread people using glitter icing, smarties and hundreds and thousands. The children couldn’t wait to take them home! We ended our day by watching a video of a child who benefits from donations from Children in Need. We are so proud of our school for raising so much money for children and families who are in need.

Well done Year 3!

Story Makers

12th November 2020 By francesstephenson

This week in Reception we have talked about story structures. We have learned that a story has a beginning – where we meet the characters and find out about the setting of the story, a middle – where there is a usually a problem (oh no!) and the end – when the problem is solved (phew!)

As a class, we looked at a familiar story – ‘The Three Little Pigs’. We then made a story map, changing some of the key elements to create our own story!

Some children then decided to create their own story maps independently. Here is Arlo’s story…

“This is Hulk, Iron Man and Spider-man. They build their own houses out of bricks, wood, and straw. Suddenly there was Big Bad Thanos and he didn’t blow the brick house down! He went down the chimney and burned his bottom on the fire. He was howling and screaming and that was the end of the Big Bad Thanos!”

Amazing!

Remembrance Day

11th November 2020 By francesstephenson

To remember all of those who have lost their lives in battle and for everyone in the armed forces, Year 3 created a beautiful handprint poppy wreath to display on our classroom window. In the centre of the poppy, we included the words, ‘we will remember them’. On Remembrance Day at 11am, the Year 3 children stood respectfully outside our classroom facing our poppy wreath during our two minute silence. Afterwards, we watched a short video about a World War One soldier who described what life was like during the war. The children learnt a lot and asked very good questions such as, ‘why did WW1 begin?’, ‘did other countries help each other?’ and some children explained that a relative of theirs was a soldier in World War Two. Throughout the day, we also wrote acrostic poems, completed a Remembrance Day comprehension as well as a Remembrance Day word search.

It’s A New Term!

6th November 2020 By francesstephenson

Welcome back! Reception must have recharged their batteries over half term because they’ve come back full of energy and worked their socks off!

To go with our new topic, ‘Toys’, we have transformed our home corner into a toy shop! The children have had so much fun shopping for their favourite toys!

We have also talked about keeping safe on Bonfire night and started some firework scratch art pictures. We have taken our time so they’re not quite finished…

Firework poetry.

5th November 2020 By francesstephenson

As many of you will know, Thursday 5th November celebrated Guy Fawkes night (or bonfire night). This week, the Year 3 children wrote their very own firework poem. We firstly looked at the features of a firework poem such as adjectives, onomatopoeia, alliteration, similes, metaphors and even personification. Miss Walker and Mrs Patterson were amazed by the children’s firework poetry – they all tried so hard and their hard work certainly paid off. Here are just some examples of the amazing firework poetry Year 3 have written this week.
