Another fantastic week in Year One!

English

In our English lessons this week, Year One have been writing a short diary entry while imagining they were the dragon teacher in our class book, ‘Who’s our new teacher?’. The children had to write what happened in the dragon’s day at school. Check out Dana’s amazing work!

At the end of the week, the children were introduced to a new book called ‘Aaaarrgghh. Spider!’ and discussed who the author and illustrator were of our new book. The children read the first few pages and absolutely love the story so far! The children’s task was to predict what they thought would happen next in the story and explaining their reasoning. Have a look at Arlo R’s fantastic prediction!

Maths

In Maths this week, the children have been learning how to compare numbers by using less than < and greater than >. We watched an excellent video about Mr and Mrs Alligator and learned that the alligator always chomps at the number that is greater! We practised this concept by chomping at the larger number to show which numbers were less and more than. All of the children fully grasped this idea and did a lot of their work independently. We are particularly proud of Oscar’s Maths work this week so did this completely on his own!

RE

We have continued our topic on families in RE this week. On Thursday, we went outside to explore all of the things God loves and cares for. The children came up with lots of great ideas such as trees, plants, flowers and even themselves! We then came back to class and drew our ideas and will be making a class collage for our RE display. The children have also explored psalms and understand that these are prayers that are often sung in church. We looked at a special psalm this week which was all about thanking God for lots of things. The children wrote a bedtime prayer thanking God and expressing how God makes them feel. Look at Arlo W’s lovely example.

Art

Mrs Days and Year One have continued their art topic all about self-portraits. Last week, the children drew a self-portrait in the style of Picasso. This week, the children then had to make their drawing bolder so it was more visible and explored colours that can show different emotions. Next week, the children will be adding different colours to their drawings to make an abstract portrait – we can’t wait! Ivy’s work is simply fantastic!

Well done Year One for another wonderful week! Miss Walker and Mrs Days are very proud of you all! x
