The Last Day!

16th July 2021 By charlottedunn

Well, after a quiet couple of weeks Year One are finally back in school. We are so grateful to be able to see everyone before we break up for the summer holidays. I have missed having all the children in class and it is lovely to see lots of smiling faces this morning.

Stay safe everyone and we will see you in September

This week, we have listened to a story called ‘The Train Ride’ where some of the words make a sound like a train chugging along. We wrote our own version of the story and tried to use interesting language. Have a look at Ben’s super writing.

After this, we had a go at reading our work aloud to the class. This was a little bit nerve-wracking but we all did a great job.

In D&T we worked in a group to design a fruit salad ready to make during Health Week. We thought about which fruits would go well in a fruit salad as well as which ones we all liked. It was a little tricky to compromise and find fruits which everyone would enjoy but we got there in the end!

We then wrote out a shopping list and imagined how our fruit salad might look.

We are looking forward to making our fruit salad next week and are keeping our fingers crossed for good weather so we can enjoy eating them in the sun.

This week we started our new R.E topic of neighbors and thought about this meant. We discussed what made a good neighbour and wrote about someone in our life who is a neighbour to us. Bill chose to write about Felicity; look at his lovely work.

In History, we also started a new topic all about transport. We looked at how people used to get around hundreds of years ago, and how modes of transport have changed through the years. Look at this neat and accurate timeline by Lucy.

After this, we watched a video of the first aeroplane flight as well as watching someone teach us how to ride a penny farthing bicycle. We decided that none of the first vehicles looked particularly safe and we didn’t think we’d like to ride on them!

Why the Penny Farthing is once more a frequent sight on the streets of London - Country Life

A great first week back Year One.

A fun week!

27th May 2021 By charlottedunn

This week we have completed ‘A Journey in Love’ as well as learning all about what to do if we feel unsafe or have a worry.

After watching a special assembly from the NSPCC, we read the book ‘Ruby’s Worry’ by Tom Percival about a girl who realises her worries get smaller the more she talks about them. We discussed any worries we might have, then wrote them down and put them in our class worry jar.

We were all very excited to come to school today dressed as characters from our favourite books. Everyone looked brilliant!

We wrote about our characters and then enjoyed listening to a retelling of ‘The Highway Rat’.

What a great day!

Friday 21st May

21st May 2021 By charlottedunn

This week in Year One we have been observing our pea plants and how well they have grown. We discussed what the plants needed and decided that sunlight, water and soil were required for them to grow well. We are going to take them home this weekend so they can be moved into larger pots and hopefully produce some peas!

We have also enjoyed reading a new book this week all about how chocolate is grown and produced. It has been making us all a little bit hungry! We had a few questions about the process so practised using question marks in our writing. We also learned some facts about chocolate and wrote them in sentences, remembering full stops. This is Erin, Daniel and Luka’s great work.

In Maths, we continued our work on fractions and began finding a quarter of an amount. The sun was shining so we decided to go outside to practise however it soon turned a little cold! This group worked brilliantly as a team to find a quarter of different amounts. Well done!

Another great week of work.

Friday 14th May

Our pea plants are continuing to grow well on the sunny windowsill. Alfie and Luke used our version of the Jack and The Peastalk story to create this fantastic Lego model featuring Jack’s house and a very tall peastalk complete with giant at the top.

We also read The Three Billy Goats Gruff this week and enjoyed acting it out. It inspired some engineers in class to build a bridge. You might be able to spot two horrible trolls underneath and some goats trip trapping across the top!

We continued our painting work by using leaves we collected from outside to print with. We created some great artwork using different shades of yellow and green.

Finally, we have focused on having in maths which has been a little bit tricky at times. We used counters to show the whole amount and then split them into two groups. Look at this great work from Harry, Emily, Freddie and Luke.

Friday 7th May

7th May 2021 By charlottedunn

We began this week with our R.E work all about the story of Pentecost. We thought about how the disciples felt before the arrival of the Holy Spirit and how they felt after. We did some great acting and even took our own photos!

As you can see, we thought they would be very sad after Jesus’ death and very shocked about the arrival of the Holy Spirit!

We have also continued out work on plants this week and have been excited to see our pea plants starting to grow. We wonder if they’ll grow as tall as Jack’s beanstalk!

We also learned about wild plants and how to identify them. We wrote riddles to see if our friends could guess which plant we were describing. Mrs. Stephenson had a go but found some of them a bit tricky!

Finally, we wrote our own stories based on Jack and the Beanstalk, except our character was climbing a peastalk. I was SO impressed by the children’s writing. Have a look at these great examples from Freddie and Harrison. Super work Year One 😊

A creative week

30th April 2021 By charlottedunn

This week we had great fun working with a coach from All Stars Cricket on Wednesday. We loved playing all of the games and showed some promising cricket skills despite the cold weather!

We have also enjoyed using some different painting techniques this week. We used forks and Lego to create these fantastic sunflower photos and then used cotton buds to make the sun that the plants will need to grow!

Finally, we thought about what we might find at the top of our beanstalk. We wrote about what building we would discover and what interesting items we might find inside. Here is Erin and Jake’s brilliant writing.

A busy week!

23rd April 2021 By charlottedunn

What a busy week we’ve had in Year One. We have been continuing reading traditional tales and this week we looked at Jack and The Beanstalk.

Our first task was to sequence the story and write our own sentences.

After that, we chose a character to describe and tried to use interesting language as well as including the word ‘because’.

In Science, we have written riddles about different plants and asked our friends to guess what they might be. We have also enjoying planting peas in the hope they will grow well and we can write our own Jack and the Peastalk stories!

We can’t wait to see how well they grow!

Welcome back!

16th April 2021 By charlottedunn

What a busy first week back we’ve had here in Year One. We have done lots of work as well as enjoying lots of time in the sunshine with our friends.

In Maths, we’ve been looking at 3D shapes. We looked at what they were called and then sorted them into different groups by their properties.

In English, we have been looking at traditional tales. We compared lots of different stories and thought about the features that were the same in every one. A big well one to everyone in Year One for working fantastically as part of a group; this can be tricky sometimes!

Yesterday, we compared different versions of Goldilocks and The Three Bears and today we are going to work with a partner to retell the story using puppets we made. I can’t wait to hear them!
