  • Dodgeball
  • Learning how to make an emergency call (our homework is to learn how to use our parents’ phones when making an emergency call and to try and learn our home addresses!)
  • First Aid
  • Water and Sun Safety
  • Tasting lots of fruit in class and at the tuck shop (some we liked, some not so much!)

Check out our lovely pictures!

What a jam packed week! Hope you all have a lovely, restful weekend! Miss Walker and Mrs Days x

A lovely couple of weeks in Year One

9th June 2022 By francesstephenson

Good morning everyone!

Phonics

Well done to all of the Year 1 children who completed their Phonics quizzes a couple of weeks ago – we are very proud of you! Year One are fantastic using their sound buttons which really helped the children to not only read the words, but to also identify graphemes, digraphs, trigraphs and split digraphs.

Maths

Year 1 have been learning position and direction recently. We have been consolidating our directional and positional language such as ‘left’, ‘right’, ‘below’ and ‘above’. The children did a great job describing position during their Maths lesson.

PE

On Thursday, Year One have been continuing their topic ‘Games’. On Thursday, Year One enjoyed learning about the rules of dodgeball and absolutely loved playing the game!

Our visit to Lanchester Library

A couple of weeks ago, Year One walked down to Lanchester Library to enjoy some lovely books in celebration of the Queen’s Jubilee. The library staff read ‘Peppa’s Royal Party’, ‘The Queen’s knickers’ and ‘The Queen’s handbag’. The children LOVED all three books and especially loved learning about the different types of knickers the Queen wear to lots of special occasions! Year One were excellent and sensible and they loved our trip to the library!

We hope you all have a lovely weekend everyone. Miss Walker and Mrs Days x

Friday 27th May

26th May 2022 By francesstephenson

Good morning everyone!

Maths

Year One have been learning about position and direction this week. On Wednesday, we practised our use of directions by directing our partner (who had their eyes closed) to their spot on the yard. We had to use language such as ‘take 3 steps forward, take 1 step backwards, turn one quarter to the left).

History

Year One had fun on the laptops by dragging Kings and Queens on to a timeline in the right order with the help of Miss Walker. We have also been learning about Grace Darling, a lady who lived in Northumberland who also made history by going out to the stormy sea with her father to save 9 sailors. The children loved learning about Grace Darling using BBC’s True Stories and had to listen out for answers to inform their fact file.

Art

Look at Year One’s beautiful collages inspired by the Rainbow Fish using different textures!

Enrichment Day

Well done to everyone for taking part in lots of activities during enrichment days this week! Well done to KS1 for their participation in rounders and for their lovely jubilee crafts that they did with Miss Walker.

Have a lovely half term break everyone! Miss Walker and Mrs Days x

Friday 20th May

19th May 2022 By alisonconlin

Good morning everyone, we hope you have all had a good week!

Art

Year One had lots of fun on Tuesday during their art lesson. The children collected and used natural materials to create a collage in the style of William Morris, as he was a great environmentalist and loved printing using nature as inspiration! Check out just some of Year One’s wonderful creations.

History – Kings and Queens.

Year One have been talking about the important decisions and rules that Kings and Queens have to make. The children then thought about what rules they would and wouldn’t have in place if they were King or Queen such as ‘Nobody is allowed to have a TV in their home’ and ‘Everyone has to respect each other’s beliefs and ideas’. We have also been reading Miss Walker’s book about Kings and Queens and were very interested in King Henry VIII’s rule and were shocked by how many wives he had! We have used the laptops to sort famous Kings and Queens on a timeline and have enjoyed finding out facts about Queen Elizabeth II.

English

Year One have loved reading our class book ‘Small Knight and George and the Royal Chocolate Cake’. This week, the children drew and wrote about meals they would serve at a royal party, they created a wanted poster to help find the naughty brigands who stole the chocolate cake in the story and created and described their very own fictional character, just like George the red dragon in the story.

You’ve been framed!

Year One often like to take their own photographs of their work but maybe we need a little more practise!

Have a great weekend everyone! Miss Walker and Mrs Days x

Good morning everyone!

Maths

Year One have been counting to  100 this week as well as counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We are fantastic mathematicians and enjoyed using cubes and counters to help us count in multiples. Miss Walker and Mrs Days are so proud!

English and Phonics

Year One have started a new book called ‘Small Knight and George and the Royal Chocolate Cake’. This week, we pretended to be the main character in our class book and wrote royal invitations to invite everyone to a special  party to welcome the King and Queen. We have also been reading and sorting real and nonsense words and applying all of our phonics sounds that we have learned in Year One.

Science

Year One have been learning all about seasonal changes between Spring and Summer. We discussed how the amount of daylight changes between Spring and Summer and discussed important events that happen between Spring and Summer such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Easter and even some of our Year One’s birthdays! We talked about what we wear between Spring and Summer and created a class bar chart. We compared our bar chart to others we have done in previous seasons to see how our clothes have changed across seasons.

DT and Art

Year One designed their very own castles over the Easter holidays and used their design plans to create their very own castles. Just check out their amazing work! Sadly, we couldn’t put pictures of everyone’s castles but we can honestly say that they were all brilliant! Mrs Days has also been teaching Year One how to print in the style of William Morris. On Tuesday, the children collected their own leaves and created their very own nature prints – look how brilliant they are!

Well done for a fantastic week, Year One! We hope you all have a lovely weekend. Miss Walker and Mrs Days x

Friday 8th April

Good morning everyone!

Fruit salad

On Friday, Year One designed, evaluated and made their own fruit salad. They followed their design brief and were very happy with their results – I bet they tasted delicious too! We used our cutting skills to slice fruit so we had to make sure we were holding the knife properly and keeping ourselves safe. We all did an amazing job!

History

Year One sorted olds toys and new toys using a venn diagram. They discussed the materials toys are made from and compared these from toys in the past. The children also discussed toys that were played with in the past but are still enjoyed today such as building blocks and robots!

Easter Eggs

Well done to all of our Year One children for such wonderful Easter eggs – they were all very creative and the children worked very hard! Well done to Arlo who was isolating but still managed to create his own easter egg at home! In our eyes, they were all worthy winners – congratulations to you all!

Year One Liturgy

Well done to all of our children in Year One for their wonderful reading, acting, respectful prayer and peacefulness during their very first liturgy. The children were a little nervous but made themselves and their families proud! You’re all amazing!💚 Thank you to all of the families who attended Year One’s liturgy!

We hope you all have a well-deserved Easter break everyone! Miss Walker and Mrs Days x

Money, money, money!

This week, Year One have been focusing on measurement. Earlier in the week, we were learning to recognise coins and notes and then added coins to make an amount.

Science

We have been exploring materials in Science recently. On Wednesday, we tested the properties of materials to see if they were bendy, waterproof, absorbent, transparent or opaque. The children loved testing different materials and discussing how some materials are better for certain items than others. We also predicted which material would be best for an umbrella and took this to the test! We first figured out what the objects were made from and tested them to see if they would keep water out of the beaker. We came to the conclusion that plastic would be the best material as it’s waterproof and light. We also discussed other waterproof materials, like glass, but talked about why this material wouldn’t be suitable for an umbrella.

Wonderful writing

Miss Walker, Mrs Days and Miss Watson have been blown away by Year One’s standard of writing this week and their motivation to write such long pieces of work! We have been focusing on retelling the story our much loved book, ‘The Man on the Moon’. Here are just some examples but we can honestly say that every single child’s writing has been out of this world! We are all very proud of each of the children!

All Stars Cricket

Year One loved their cricket taster session on Thursday afternoon and definitely have some enthusiastic children who would like to start this sport as their new hobby! Thank you to All Stars Cricket for such a wonderful lesson.

Finally, a big thank you to Miss Watson for all of her wonderful help, teaching and support in Year One over the last two weeks. Miss Walker, Mrs Days and of course all of the children will miss her and we thank her for being a fantastic teacher and a supportive role model to all of the children. We wish Miss Watson the very best of luck in her future studies to become a teacher!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone! Miss Walker, Mrs Days and Miss Watson x

Race for Life

25th March 2022 By francesstephenson

Well done to all of our Year One children, in school and at home, for completing the Race for Life to raise money for cancer research. The children thought of lots of loved ones who are or who suffered from Cancer and we remembered them every step of the way! Year One were supposed to only do one lap of the running track but because they were so motivated, they all wanted to do another lap! Well done to everyone who took part in the Race for Life and a big thank you to all families for helping to raise money for this fantastic cause – you’re all amazing!

Mothers’ Day

Year One would like to wish all of their mums a wonderful day on Mothering Sunday!

Wonderful writing and fun at the farm!

17th March 2022 By francesstephenson

Wonderful Writing

Year One have been learning about shape poetry in our English lessons. After learning about adjectives, similes and alliteration, the children wrote shape poems based on four different sea creatures. Look at their fantastic writing!

On Wednesday, the children were also set the challenge to write about a picture independently. The children came up with their own ideas and tried their best to use their sounds and beautiful handwriting. After a very tough decision, as all of the children’s work was fantastic, Miss Walker decided to award Dana’s work the ‘work of the week’. She tried so hard to spell words correctly and the improvement in her handwriting was incredible!

Hall Hill Farm

On Thursday, Year One visited Hall Hill Farm and were guided around the farm by the fantastic staff. We had a wonderful day visiting lots of gorgeous animals such as bunnies, chicks, llamas, alpacas, ponies, peacocks and baby goats! We loved feeding the animals and learning lots of interesting facts about them. We enjoyed our lunch at the farm (thank you to the kitchen for making our delicious packed lunches!) and loved our ride on the tractor. We finished our trip by playing in the playground with our friends – even the teachers joined in! Year One were fantastic around the animals and behaved very well around the farm and on the bus. We are so proud! We have put lots of pictures on the blog so our families can see all of our wonderful pictures – enjoy! Have a lovely weekend everyone! Miss Walker and Mrs Days x

Friday 11th March

10th March 2022 By francesstephenson

Good morning everyone,

Year One remember Ukraine

During the lead up to Easter, Year One gathered together for a class liturgy. We talked about Jesus and the difficulties he faced throughout his life, particularly the time leading up to his death on the cross. We talked about how joyful and happy people were on Easter Sunday when their faith was restored. When we thought about this, we remembered the people in Ukraine who, like Jesus, are going through what must be a horrendous and stressful time. We prayed to God asking him to bless and help them throughout this difficult time and asked God for peace throughout Ukraine soon. Afterwards, we wrote cards to children in Ukraine to let them know we are thinking of them and filled the card with thoughtful, happy pictures such as rainbows, hearts and flowers.

Multiplication mosaics

Year One continue to focus on their multiplication skills. This week, as a fun activity, the children completed a multiplication mosaic to reveal an emoji image. They couldn’t wait to figure out the answers so they could reveal the picture!

Toys

PE

Year One had lots of fun on Thursday during PE. This week, the children out their aim to the test by rolling a ball accurately towards a target. We used useful aiming techniques to help us when rolling. Miss Walker then made the task harder by putting an obstacle in the way, a chair! The children had to accurately roll the ball under the chair’s legs towards the target on the other side. They were all fantastic! We finished the lesson by some brilliant throwing and catching with our partners.

Well done for another wonderful week, Year One – have a great weekend! Miss Walker and Mrs Days x
