Adventure Day

8th July 2022 By charlottedunn

This week, I’d just like to share with you some photos from our brilliant day at Moor House Adventure Centre. Year 3 took part in the high ropes activity, the cave bus and den building. Every single person wasย brilliant! I was so proud of their resilience, determination and confidence at giving all of the activities a go.

24th June 2022 By charlottedunn

What a fun start to the final half term we have had! At the end of last week we finally got to take part in our long awaited desert survival day where we worked with Heather and _ to complete lots of interesting challenges, all to help us earn sand in our jar. We had so much fun putting up tents, attracting attention from passing aeroplanes, taking part in a sand skis obstacle course and dressing up in desert clothing!

Our winning team were ‘Team Cactus’ but it was a very close race!

In Art, we continued learning about European artists and this week it was the turn of Salvador Dali. We looked at some of his surrealist work and learned that he was not only famous for his art, but also for his unusual appearance including his excellent moustache! Inspired by this, we drew our own self portraits then added a stylable, pipe cleaner moustache!

In English, we have been reading Ottoline and the Yellow Cat where the main character, Ottoline, and her friend, Mr. Munroe, are trying to solve a dog-napping mystery. Ottoline is well-known for writing clever plans in her notebook so we had a go at creating our own notebook pages using those from the text as inspiration. It was lots of fun to try some different layout features in English and I loved Jack, Phoebe and Isla W’s designs.

In Science, we have been learning about different types of skeleton; endoskeleton, exoskeleton and hydrostatic skeleton. We sorted living things into groups depending on what type of skeleton we thought they had, and then thought about advantages and disadvantages to each one. Look at this fantastic, thorough work from Aleesha and Blake.

We’ve loved the sunny weather and are keeping our fingers crossed it continues! Have a great weekend everyone ๐Ÿ™‚

Friday 20th May

20th May 2022 By charlottedunn

This week, we continued with our Ancient Greek topic by learning about the Spartans. We found out that Spartan boys left home aged 7 and trained for 23 years to become the very best fighters. We were also interested to learn that their cloaks were red so they did not show up any bloodstains. Freddie and Eliza were so interested in this topic; look at all their fantastic writing.

In English, we designed characters to write our own Greek myths about. There were some great adjectives used as well as some fantastic drawing skills. Here is Benny’s work…

In Art, we continued our work on European artists and looked at Rembrandt’s use of light and shadow. We also found out that although he was very talented, Rembrandt wasn’t always popular as he chose to paint poor people. After we had look at his work, we had a go at trying to create different shades using our pencils. It was quite tricky to get the lightest shade as we only needed to press very gently. Have a look at Lucie and Martha’s lovely research and techniques…

In R.E, we looked at the gifts of the Holy Spirit and worked as part of a group to think about how we could demonstrate these gifts in our own lives.

Have a lovely weekend everyone ๐Ÿ™‚

Friday 13th May

13th May 2022 By charlottedunn

This half term our History topic is Ancient Greece so we have begun by reading some Greek myths.

Greek Myths (Wordsmith (Literacy Service)) : Geraldine Mccaughrean, Geraldine: Amazon.co.uk: Books

We first read Pandora’s Box and thought about how the character Prometheus might be feeling at different points in the story. Next, we read Daedalus and Icarus and Arachne the Spinner and compared the two. We decided that each story was to teach people about being too boastful. Isla K and Eliza had some excellent ideas and tried so hard with their presentation.

We are really enjoying reading the Greek myths and can’t wait to hear some more next week.

We also enjoyed learning about the Greek gods and goddesses as well as finding out what life was like in Ancient Greece. Here is Blake’s lovely work.

In Art, we are looking at important European artists and started last week with Michelangelo who is well known for painting the Sistene Chapel. Because Michelangelo had to paint the ceiling, we had a go to see what it would be like to draw lying down. Jessica discovered she has a real talent for art done in this way!

We have also enjoyed solving the problems on this Ancient Greek game. Here’s the link if you’d like to have a go yourself

Friday 8th April

8th April 2022 By charlottedunn

We have finally come to the end of another busy term and began our week with some egg decorating! There were lots of wonderfully creative designs and it was clear to see how much effort everyone put in to making their egg look great.

We continued our creative week by finishing our D&T topic which was to make a sandwich which included some cress we had grown. Not everyone was sure if they would like the taste of cress so we tried it first then decided how much to add to our sandwiches. I’m sure you’ll agree they looked delicious!

Finally, we erupted our volcanoes! Here are some photos of how they looked before…

And here they are during the eruption…

If you’d like to try this at home all you need is some bicarbonate of soda and some white vinegar, as well as red food colouring if you’d like your ‘lava’ to be red.

What a fun week! Have a wonderful Easter break everyone ๐Ÿ™‚

Friday 1st April

1st April 2022 By charlottedunn

Another busy week in Year 3 – I don’t know how we are managing to fit so much in!

First, we used modrock to create some volcanoes which we hope to make erupt next week. I have to say that everyone loved getting very messy, but also did a great job of tidying up! It was lovely to see everyone working so well together.

We then continued our volcano work and created posters showing reasons ‘for’ and ‘against’ living near a volcano. We learned that although volcanoes can attract lots of tourists which creates jobs for local people there is always a risk living so close by. We found out about pyroclastic flow (a very hot mixture of rock fragments, gas, and ash that travels incredibly quickly down the slopes of a volcano) and saw how damaging this can be to anything in its path.

Deadly Volcanic Flows Glide on Their Own Cushion of Air - Scientific American

We were lucky enough to have a visit from All Stars Cricket this week and we loved practising our cricket skills and playing lots of fun games.

In Maths, we have been working on capacity and adding and subtracting different amounts. I was so impressed with Izzy’s problem solving and potion mixing skills!

We also did some fantastic descriptive writing based on The Firework-Makers Daughter – this is Aleesha, Eliza and Blake’s work.

Their descriptions included phrases such as ‘the full moon shone as bright as the sun’, ‘the golden, glistening sand is like a paradise’ and ‘I can see colourful fish and the sun projecting off the clear, blue sea’. Reading these really made me feel like I was on a tropical island!

A great week’s work. Have a lovely weekend everyone ๐Ÿ™‚

Friday 18th March

18th March 2022 By charlottedunn

I can’t believe we’re already at the end of another week – time seems to be flying by!

In Maths we have been looking at measuring and began by using the scales to weigh some items. We thought carefully about the difference between grams and kilograms and worked together to record out results.

We have also really enjoyed using the glockenspiels to play a melody to accompany a piece of music. I couldn’t believe how good everyone was! Perhaps one week I’ll be able to upload a video of us playing!

In English, we have continued our work on The Firework-Maker’s Daughter and wrote a diary entry as the main character, Lila, who has set off on a mission to Mount Merapi to find the secret ingredient for making the best fireworks. We tried out best to include a subordinate clause; have a look at this fantastic work.

In Geography, we learned that Mount Merapi is actually a real volcano in Indonesia. It is the most active volcano in Indonesia and has erupted regularly since 1548. We learned that thousands of people all over the world live on the land around volcanoes and although we thought this was a dangerous choice, we found out that it is because the soil near a volcano is particularly fertile and excellent for growing crops.

Another great week in Year 3. Have a lovely weekend everyone ๐Ÿ™‚

Friday 11th March

11th March 2022 By charlottedunn

Starting off with last week, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to share some World Book Day photos. Everyone looked fantastic in their costumes.

After our parade in the hall we then joined a Teams meeting with lots of other local schools to read ‘The Worst Class In The World’ by Joanna Nadin. After that, we had a task to design our own interesting biscuit to try and become ‘biscuit kings’ (or queens) just like the children in the book.

We’re looking forward to finding out who has won the competition!

This week, we finished our Egyptian topic by making death masks out of clay. It was so much fun experimenting with the clay and we really enjoyed moulding it into different shapes. We then painted them and, although there were a few catastrophes, I’m sure you’ll agree they look great!

We also began our new Science and Geography topics this week. In Science, we revisited the parts of a plant and what each part does and then created a booklet to share the information we had learned. This is Izzy and Elayna’s fantastic work.

In Geography, we learned what is beneath our feet and what we’d find if we were somehow able to dig a big hole right to the centre of the earth. Look at these neat and accurate diagrams and explanations.

What a busy week! Have a lovely weekend everyone ๐Ÿ™‚

Happy Half Term

18th February 2022 By charlottedunn

What a lovely snowy morning for our final day of this half term!

We have had a brilliant week working on our watercolour paintings, doing lots of mindfulness activities and reminding ourselves and each other who we can turn to if we have a problem as well as completing a Journey in Love.

Here are Jessica and Isla sketching their special items and some sneak previews of our finished watercolours. We are looking forward to more of our families coming to look at them after school today.

We also created some self portraits based on our outer and inner self. We talked about how our outer self is what people see and our inner self are our thoughts, feelings, hobbies and interests. We created such colourful pieces and I loved seeing how everyone viewed their inner self.

We also enjoyed reading ‘Ruby’s Worry’ and ‘The Problem with Problems’. Both of these books focus on how talking about a worry or problem to someone we trust can make us feel a lot better, and even hopefully help the worry to get smaller or go away completely!

Ruby's Worry: A Big Bright Feelings Book : Percival, Tom, Percival, Tom: Amazon.co.uk: BooksThe Problem with Problems (Problems/Worries/Fears): Amazon.co.uk: Rooney, Rachel, Hicks, Zehra: 9781783448715: Books

Wishing everyone a fantastic half term holiday,

Mrs Dunn ๐Ÿ™‚

Friday 11th February

11th February 2022 By charlottedunn

As you may have seen on Twitter, Year 3 have been writing non-chronological reports this week using their excellent knowledge of the ancient Egyptians. We really enjoyed including pictures in our writing and including lots of interesting facts. These are just three examples of the excellent work; look at the fantastic presentation. Maddison, Molly and Imogen really tried hard on their handwriting and setting out so their reports were as good as ones youโ€™d find in a book!

In maths, weโ€™ve continued our work on fractions and have been adding and subtracting this week. Some of us realised that the number 1 means one whole and used this to work out some missing number problems. Well done to Izzy and Abigail for their accurate work.

In Art, we finished our Egyptian topic by looking at the work of Alaa Awad, a modern Egyptian artist who is known for his murals. We loved the rich, bold colours he used and produced our own pastel work. Isla W and Emilia both used these pictures as their inspiration and I think they really captured the bright reds Alaa Awad loves to use.
