Year Five have worked so hard on their tests this week and have all done very well. Mrs Baum and Mrs Forrest are so proud of them all!

Around our tests we have been working on our curriculum. In Geography we have been looking at the countries and capital cities in North and South America. We also learned all about the mountain ranges of the world and found out that the names of the famous mountain ranges in North and South America. The children now know some fascinating mountain facts! These are Sarah and Matthew’s books.

In R.E. we finished our topic by looking at the Beatitudes and thinking about why they are important. The children also thought hard about how they could be linked to our lives today. This is Max W’s book.

We can’t leave our blog today without showing some of the fun we had in Health Week last week. The weather may have been a little unpredictable but we all still had a fun-filled week, packed with different activities. Here is a small selection of Y5’s photos.

Have a wonderful weekend Y5 and we will see you next week.

Friday 27th May

27th May 2022 By janelleforrest

Another full and busy week in Y5, with so many exciting enrichment activities. In the classroom we have also been busy!

In English we found out all about the school that David and Tucky go to in their new home. The boys and girls found lots of clues in the text about what the school looked like and then used this evidence to write some beautiful, descriptive pieces of writing. This is Aria’s work.

In Science we are learning all about the life-cycles of different animals, including humans. This week it was the frog and butterfly. The boys and girls had so much fun making frogs with split pins, so they could fold the legs and tail away to show the different stages. This is George’s book and his well-drawn cycle.

We have also started designing our CO2 powered race cars with Phil. The children had to think carefully about the shape of their car and what would help it go faster.

Have a wonderful break Y5, we will see you all soon. Love from Mrs Forrest and Mrs Baum.

Friday 20th May

20th May 2022 By janelleforrest

At the end of last week Year 5 had a real treat. Phil, an engineer from Steam Workshops came for his first visit. The boys and girls, over the course of the next few weeks will design and make a CO2 powered racing car in groups. Our first session concentrated on streamlined shapes for vehicles and why certain animals are streamlined. The boys and girls did a great job and recalled so much scientific knowledge from earlier on in the year. We can’t wait to see the cars racing!

In R.E we have been talking about the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. The children thought about our world now and what Jesus would think about it. We thought about what he might not like about the world and also what he would be very proud of. The boys and girls then summarised this in a sentence and drew pictures to demonstrate what a world transformed by Jesus would look like. These are Poppy, George, Megan and Jessica’s ideas.

In Maths we have worked on a tricky skill, converting between different units of measurement. The children did so well recapping how many mm in a cm, cm in a m, m in a km  and so on, and then had to work out how to convert them using this knowledge. As it isn’t a skill that the children practise every day, it can be difficult to remember, but Y5 made Mrs Forrest and Mrs Baum very proud with their enthusiasm and perseverance. These are Aria and Max’ books which show how tricky the questions could be!

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Friday 13th May

13th May 2022 By janelleforrest

Halfway through the first part of summer term already and Y5 are working as hard as ever!

In English we have started reading our new text ‘Friend or Foe’ by Michael Morpurgo. In it we meet two boys evacuated from London to Devon during WWII to keep them safe from bombing raids. This week we also meet a mysterious character called Mr Reynolds. The children had to decide from our first impressions of him whether he was a friendly character or not. Using evidence from the text we then wrote a character description, using both clues about his appearance and personality. This is Max’s work, using some excellent descriptive language.

In P.E. this term Y5 have dance and are learning all about the world famous Haka, a ceremonial dance in Māori culture, most famously used by the New Zealand All Blacks before their rugby matches begin. It is used as a challenge to the opposition and Y5 have really enjoyed making warrior faces and copying the vigorous movements used!

In History we are learning about the ancient Mayan culture. This week we learned all about their religious beliefs and gods. The boys and girls chose two of their favourite gods and created a fact file about them. They then thought about what they had learned and created their own Mayan god. This is Poppy and Leo’s work, beautifully presented and very interesting.

Have a lovely restful weekend Y5, from Mrs Forrest and Mrs Baum

Friday 1st April

1st April 2022 By janelleforrest

Another lovely week in Y5 with lots of fun and some great results.

In English we have been looking at a poem by Charles Causley called The Green Man in the Garden. The boys and girls did lots of work on describing an object without saying the word. They then improved their sentences using their knowledge of figurative language. Mrs Forrest had great fun marking them and guessing what the children had written about. Here are Matthew and Sarah’s poems.

In Science we investigated which materials were more absorbent than others. The children devised a fair test together, predicted which materials would soak up the most water in ten seconds and then recorded their results scientifically in a table.

In Art the children have been improving their sketching skills, learning about proportion when sketching a person. This week they finished their sketches off and used their watercolour knowledge to complete their pictures. Here are some of their finished paintings. Beautiful!

Have a lovely restful weekend Y5, we have a very exciting week ahead of us! Lots of love from Mrs Forrest and Mrs Baum.

Friday 18th March

18th March 2022 By janelleforrest

Year Five have had another busy week and as always have tried their best and worked so well.

In Maths we have been converting fractions into decimals and then decimals back into fractions. We started using tenths and hundredths. When the children were comfortable with this we moved into converting mixed numbers into decimal numbers and by the end of the week the children were working happily with thousandths! These are Will and Francesca’s books, well presented and full of hard work.

In R.E. we have started our new topic about Lent and Easter. To begin the topic the children heard a story about a young carer called Sean. We discussed what giving meant, how it wasn’t always an easy thing to do and then the boys and girls generated words that are related to the word giving. This is Brogan’s beautifully presented work.

In Art the children have been looking at the work of different artists and this week was the turn of John Singer Sargent, an American artist. The boys and girls looked carefully at his work which then inspired their own sketches, focussing especially on proportion.

Well done everyone. Have a wonderful restful weekend and we will see you all next week!

Another busy week in Y5, packed with learning and lots of fun!

We have taken part in the #PackedwithHope campaign this week. The boys and girls have drawn pictures and written messages of hope and support for Ukrainian refugee children. These messages will go into backpacks for lots of children in the hope that they will raise a smile and let them know we are all thinking of them and praying for them. Well done Y5, your messages were positive and thoughtful.

In English this week we have learned how to present a balanced argument. The children had so much fun debating various topics and then we thought carefully about Ayesha, the main character in our class text. We thought of reasons why she should or should not cross the dangerous Green Line in Beirut. We then presented these arguments using language to support them and drew our own conclusions at the end based on what we had written. These are Daniel and Brogan’s well-presented pieces of writing.

Our Geography topic this term is Rivers. Last week we learned all about the Water Cycle with some interesting discussions! This week we have talked about the major rivers of the world. The boys and girls used an atlas to locate some of the world’s largest rivers and then drew them onto their maps after locating the correct continent and then country. The children enjoyed working with the atlases together and spotting familiar place names during their search.

Have a wonderful weekend boys and girls, love from Mrs Baum and Mrs Forrest.

Friday 18th February

18th February 2022 By janelleforrest

What a different week we have had in school this week, but as usual Y5 have worked so well together and learned so much!

In R.E. we have been learning all about Islam. The children have learned about Ramadan, the festival of Eid-al-Fitr and the fifth Pillar of Islam, pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. The boys and girls enjoyed learning about different people’s beliefs and the importance of respecting everyone in this. Here are some examples of our written work on Ramadan, Eid cards and Ramadan decorations.

In our Journey in Love topic this week, Y5 have been learning how the body grows and changes to become an adult. The children behaved maturely throughout the week, asked some fantastic questions to help their understanding and listened sensibly and carefully throughout. Well done Y5.

We have had so many different activities to take part in this week, including a visit from Miss Douglas from Dog’s Trust, who taught us how to behave around dogs, both that we know and don’t know, and also why dogs behave in a certain way. She shared some important messages about what dogs do and don’t understand to help keep us all safe. Thank you to Leo for showing the class how to approach a dog we don’t know.

Enjoy your holiday Y5, you have earned it! From Mrs Forrest and Mrs Baum.

Year Five have had such an interesting week!

In Maths the boys and girls have been learning about angles. They can identify a right angle, an acute angle and an obtuse angle. They have also learned how many degrees are in a full, half and quarter turn, and today will be working on their protractor skills. Here is an example of their skills at identifying different angles.

In Art the children have been learning about an artist from Cornwall called Alfred Wallis. This week the children used his style and acrylic paints to create some lovely paintings. As you can see the children had a lot of messy fun!

We were really lucky this week in our History lesson. We have been learning all about the Consett Steelworks and how important it is to find information from primary sources. On Tuesday we had a real life primary source in our classroom, Mrs Collins, who used to work at the Steelworks. The boys and girls had prepared some questions for her and she taught us so many new facts, especially about the actual working conditions inside and the importance of the Steelworks to the local area and the rest of the world. Did you know, Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia is made from Consett steel? Thank you so much Mrs Collins!

Have a lovely weekend Year Five, from Mrs Forrest, Mrs Baum and Jack.
