Good afternoon everyone.

We have had a lovely couple of weeks in Year Six. Last week we were camping on the school field, it was great fun, we played some games where two teams had to get from one point to another only using spots; it was very much like ‘The Floor is Lava’. We then sat around the firepit to sing songs and have a barbeque. Then, when it started raining and began to turn dark, we lit the fire, drank hot chocolate and toasted some marshmallows. We had a wonderful time but were very sleepy the next day!

We have loved Health Week this week too! Kane was amazing at during our Hoopstarz session and kept his hoop moving for the longest time out of the whole class! Emma was fantastic too – just look at her keeping two hoops moving at the same time!

I also asked Year Six to think creatively and come up with some original poses for some sporty pictures… as you can imagine, they did not disappoint!

Good morning everyone,

It has been lovely being back in school this week with the sun shining down, let’s hope the weather stays like this.

We have been very busy in Maths this week. We began the week by finishing off our revision of fractions, decimals and percentages then moved onto some one and two step word problems. The children found these challenging at first but all worked extremely hard and both Mrs Oliver and I are delighted with the hard work we have seen.

In English, we have been writing creatively this week. Mrs Oliver’s group watched a short video clip and re-wrote the episode from the point of view of Alma, they had to write in first person and in the present tense. They have all created some wonderful pieces of writing and made for some interesting reading. Mr Prince’s group used a picture to begin thinking of ideas for a story, the picture showed two children in a dark forest. We also had some wonderfully creative ideas about goblins and dirt bikes and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this week’s writing.

This week’s quiz was hosted by Ashton and Aleks, they asked some very difficult questions but everyone tried their best and enjoyed taking part.

Good afternoon everyone,

We have had a wonderful week in Year Six completing our Journey in Love booklets. We had some very interesting conversations and both Mrs Oliver and I were so impressed at the maturity shown by everyone in class.

A couple of weeks ago, during a Science lesson with Mrs Oliver, the children were learning about some extreme sports that some people take part in. One of these extreme sports was cheese rolling – the children all thought this was brilliant and so we decided to conduct our own cheese rolling competition. Throughout the week, children have all brought in a can to decorate as cheese then, yesterday, we had a knockout style competition in which Kane was victorious. There were also prizes for the ‘cheesiest outfit’ and the ‘I did not get cheesed off’ award for good sportsmanship. It was a lovely afternoon and we all had a great time.

We have loved seeing all of your wonderful outfits and smiling faces in school today for our We Love Books Day!

Good morning everyone,

We hope you have all had a lovely week this week.

Brandon has been checking on the growth of his plants in the greenhouse of the school eco garden, they seem to be coming on really well – great work Brandon!

In Geography, we have continued our ‘Maps’ topic and have been using an ordnance survey website called: footpathmaps.com to find specific areas, we them familiarised ourselves with google maps, we found out how to find the distance from one point to another and look at the different routes we could take then compared the times these journeys would take. The children loved looking for their houses and places of interest, then using the street view tool to see them from a first person perspective. Logan and Keira were shocked to see that, on the street view, Keira’s house had not yet been built – Google really needs to update the images! Luke and Liam could not believe how different our school looked, they loved the old curved steps and ramp. Alice and Sophie were also very excited to find Sophie’s house, she did explain that the trees at the front are now a lot larger though.

Finally, Arthur and Harry were this week’s quiz hosts. They did an excellent job, Arthur had to explain some Marvel fan facts to me, I was so disappointed at the fact I did not know one of the answers because I love Marvel! Harry also got us thinking with some tricky riddles, it was great fun.

Good morning everyone,

We have been working very hard in Year Six this week.

In RE this week, we planned our end of topic worship for our Witnesses topic and Evie’s worship was chosen for everyone to take part in. Luke and Evie both led the worship on Wednesday and it was excellent. Both Mrs Oliver and I were extremely impressed with the calmness and reverence shown by all children.

In Geography this week, we have continued learning about OS maps. We looked at an OS map for the Consett and the Derwent Reservoir area, the children could not believe how big the map was! They all looked for points on the map such as All Saints’ Primary School, Consett Park and their own house, then wrote 4 and 6 figure grid references for each of these points. Here is an excellent example of work completed by Luke.

We have also enjoyed another wonderful quiz, this week’s hosts were Joe and Archie – they did a brilliant job! Unfortunately, I do not have any photos from this week but I have attached some below from a few weeks ago. We look forward to next week’s quiz when Arthur and Harry will be hosting.

Good morning!

We hope you all enjoyed an extra day off on Monday this week, and to make thing even better, this meant that we returned to school on Star Wars Day – May 4th. Year 6 returned from their bank holiday break in high spirits and have been working hard all week.

In maths this week we are working with fractions. Everyone is making good progress and taking care to present work to a high standard. Well done for working with great concentration and focus with some tricky problems.

In English Mrs. Oliver’s group have continued their ‘Journey to the River Sea’ by using the computers to research the setting of the novel. It has been fascinating to compare the Amazonian Rainforest and the city of Manaus in 1910 (when the novel is set) to the modern day. Our writing challenge this week was to create a promotional leaflet about the area and the children have produced informative, colourful and engaging designs. It certainly made Mrs. Oliver want to follow in Maia’s adventurous footsteps!

In RE, Year 6 showed empathy and maturity when considering the plight of street children in India. We looked at the selfless work of Father Balashowry who runs a centre to help get children off the streets and give them a future full of hope and possibility. We discussed how, as a witness to God, we can all play a part in helping others. This links to our Mission Statement as we realised the need, not to have more but to be more.

We hope you have all had a lovely week.

We have been very busy in Year Six this week, in English, the children have been revising how to punctuate direct speech correctly. Mrs Oliver’s group acted out a range of conversations then wrote these down in their books. We had some wonderful ideas and it was great to see so many children working hard to keep their presentation neat. Mr Prince’s group have been learning about the first American female astronaut to go into space, Sally Ride. We read a non-fiction text about her life then wrote a first person diary about her experience.

In maths, the children have been revising methods for division and multiplication then using these methods to solve word problems.

In geography, we have continued our topic about ordinance survey maps. This week we have been revising how to write 4-figure grid references. Here is a lovely example of work completed by Noah.

In RE, we have been learning about a lady called Mrs Maricho who gave up her good job in Manila and moved to an island called Natandol to open a school. She teaches 600 children! It is a very poor area and the children have to make toys out of items washed up on the beach or rubbish that is no longer needed, it really made us all feel lucky to have the wonderful resources that we do. Here is a lovely example of work completed by Keira.

I hope everyone has had a lovely week, we have certainly enjoyed being out on the field at lunchtime in the glorious sunshine and hope this lovely weather continues.

During remote learning, we all took part in a weekly general knowledge quiz. It was great fun and, since everyone loved it, I decided to keep this going. Last week was very exciting as I got out my speaker and microphone to present the quiz, this week it’s Logan and Amelia’s turn to host and I am looking forward to seeing what questions they have came up with.

In RE this week, we have been revising the story of Pentecost and discussing the role of an early deacon. We all wrote our own job applications and explained the qualities we felt were important for this position. Here are two excellent examples written by Kane and Aleks.

In Science this week, we have been creating a menu to reflect a healthy balanced diet, here are some excellent examples.

It has been lovely to see all of your smiling faces again this week, and to make things even better, the sun has also been shining.

We have been incredibly busy in Year Six this week, some children have been reading the story of Hercules and writing their own heroic story; others have begun reading a novel called Journey to the River Sea and writing a letter based on this.

In Maths, some children have been revising the short division method and applying this when challenged with word problems. Others have been consolidating place value knowledge for numbers up to one million!

In Geography this week, we have begun our new topic and have been looking at ordinance survey maps, we focused on the symbols that we could see and created our own key that would help people understand what the symbols represent. Here is a lovely example of Rachel’s work.

This week in Maths we have been revising how to multiply numbers using the short method, we found it tricky at first but I am delighted at how hard everyone in class has worked.

In RE, we have been finishing off our sixth Unit, everyone created a wonderfully informative leaflet about what happens in church on Good Friday. I have enjoyed our class discussions and hearing about everyone’s experiences of Easter services in church.

On afternoons this week, we have been using a website called Code.org to develop our coding skills. Everyone started by writing a code to make a cat or sloth dance to one of their favourite songs, they were even able to write a code that meant whenever they pressed an arrow key, their animal clapped to the beat.
