Friday 8th July in Year Six

7th July 2022 By matthewprince

Good morning everyone.

We have been very busy in Year Six over the past few weeks.

Last week, we had a great time taking part in many Health Week activities. Everyone loved the golf afternoon, cheerleading, rugby and best of all – the inflatables!

Along with assembly practise and visits to St Bede’s this week, on Monday, we visited the Emmaus Youth Village which is located near Allensford Park. It was a wonderful day with an inspiring message to love ourselves and know that we are always enough; God gave us all the tools we need to live our life!

We also have some wonderful news to share about two children in our class.

In the 2022 Derwentside Sports Awards,  Ed won the Outstanding Achievement Award for his success in cross country events – he won every race in which he competed for our school.

In addition, outside of school, Isabel also won first place in a gymnastics competition out of 15 other competitors when she competed in Wigan last weekend.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Best wishes,

Mr Prince and Miss Mather

Friday 20th May

20th May 2022 By matthewprince

We have been very busy in Year Six this week.

On Wednesday, a lady called Sally came into our class for the afternoon to teach us about engineering. She explained different types of engineering jobs that people could do when they grow up – it was very interesting! After this, she focused on marine engineering and the children learned about buoyancy and up-thrust. We discussed how boats actually float and learned about the development process from coming up with an initial idea to creating, testing and improving our creations. Finally, the children were put into groups and had to design and build their own boats then see how many marbles their boat would hold. It was a lot of fun and there were some fantastic and innovative designs.

In RE this week, the children had the opportunity to act out a scene from the bible where Jesus is speaking to his disciples in Matthew 28: 16-20. Everyone had a great time thinking about how the disciples would have felt after being tasked with the job of spreading the good news and baptising people into God’s family.

Have a lovely weekend.

Best wishes,

Mr Prince and Miss Mather

SATS… completed it mate!

13th May 2022 By matthewprince

Woohoo!

As you will all know, Year Six have been completing their SATS tests this week. We are all immensely proud of every single one of them for the effort, focus and determination they have all shown.

However, in addition to lots of revision, over the past few weeks, we have also found time for some very enjoyable activities. One of these activities was a day out to the Nissan factory. The children learned about the origins of the business, the production line and were able to try out some of the tools used in the factory such as an impact driver. They all had a wonderful day.

In addition, the children also enjoyed learning to ride a bike safely during the ‘Bikeability’ course. The week began with children riding in the school yard to practise stability and hand signals. Then, in following days, the children were able to ride around the local area with trained instructors. The feedback from everyone was very positive and it was great seeing all the smiling faces each day.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Best wishes,

Mr Prince and Miss Mather

Friday 8th April

8th April 2022 By matthewprince

We have had a great week in Year 6!

Egg decorating was a lot of fun on Tuesday; a lot of effort went into creating the eggs and all of the teachers were blown away by the extremely high standard and innovative ideas.

The children also enjoyed their French lesson with Mrs Baum and Miss Mather this week too!

Finally, this week the children completed their computing topic. They were given specific criteria which they had to include when making a PowerPoint presentation about a topic they are interested in. They then had to present this to the class. It was great seeing such a variety of topics; everyone spoke with real confidence too! I am also happy to share with you that everyone was able to include all the features on the success criteria – super work Year 6!

Have a lovely Easter break everyone!

Best wishes,

Mr Prince and Miss Mather

Friday 1st April

1st April 2022 By matthewprince

In English this week, the children have all written a balanced argument about whether or not people who live in Syria should get on illegal boats and travel to Europe. We have been learning about this topic while reading our class text ‘Illegal’ by Eoin Colfer and Andrew Donkin. I was extremely impressed with the maturity shown during our class discussions and it was wonderful to have Mrs Stephenson join us to see some of the excellent writing yesterday.

We have also been very busy on afternoons this week. On Tuesday, the children all continued their PowerPoint presentations and wrote a set of instructions which explained how to set up a folder in a shared file. We discussed how this makes it much easier to locate files.

Finally, yesterday we had a visit from St Bedes. We all watched a video and saw lots of pictures of what the school looks like. I believe that most people are more excited for the food selection than they are about the school itself! Everyone had the opportunity to ask questions and there was a real buzz of excitement in the classroom – it was a great afternoon.

Have a lovely weekend.

Friday 25th March

24th March 2022 By matthewprince

We have had a wonderful week in Year Six.

In RE, we have finished our Unity topic and have all written prayers for peace and unity. Everyone thought of some wonderful ideas; I was particularly impressed with Hugh and Emily’s efforts.

In Music, we continued learning to perform ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams. This week we all had a go at using the glockenspiels, it was tricky to get the rhythm right at first but everyone managed very well in the end. I look forward to seeing how we all manage to put different parts together over the next few weeks.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Good morning everyone.

In Geography this week in Year Six, we have been using 6-figure grid references to locate points on a map. We looked at an ordnance survey map of our local area and picked specific points then used 6-figure grid references to describe the position of these points so others would be able to locate them too.

In English, we are all enjoying a different type of book this half term. We are reading a graphic novel called Illegal which is written by Eoin Colfer and Andrew Donkin. It follows the story of a young boy called Ebo who lives in Syria; he has to travel across the country to find his brother Kwame before getting on an extremely unsafe boat in search for a better life in Europe. This week, we have all written diary entries as Ebo and explained our journey so far. Here is a wonderful example of work by Ava.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Friday 11th March

10th March 2022 By matthewprince

We have been very busy in Year Six this week.

In Maths, we have been refining our protractor skills: measuring and drawing angles. Everyone worked very hard and with excellent focus; both Miss Mather and I are very pleased with the progress everyone has made.

On Tuesday, some of the boys in the class took part in a basketball competition. They did extremely well and didn’t lose a single game – Isaac even scored a basket by throwing the ball backwards! However, what impressed us all the most was the wonderful attitude and teamwork shown by those who participated – well done boys!

Additionally, those of us who were still in school carried out a scientific investigation to find out what effect exercise has on our heartrate. Everyone wrote down their aim, hypothesis and method then draw a table for their results. We then carried out the investigation and recorded our results before writing a conclusion. Finally, we used the laptops to create an Excel spreadsheet showing our results and used the graph feature to create a line graph. Just look at the professional quality of Annabell’s work.

In RE this week, everyone created a stained glass window which shared the message ‘many yet one’, a very important message which resonates strongly in all our minds at the moment. This is Holly’s wonderful work.

Finally, a huge well-done goes to Ellen who competed in a swimming gala last weekend. We are extremely proud of her achievements and were surprised that she could even hold her head up with all those medals weighing it down!

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Best wishes,

Mr Prince and Miss Mather

Fri-yay 18th February!

17th February 2022 By matthewprince

Good morning everyone.

We have had a wonderful week in Year Six creating our artwork for the galleries last night and tonight. Everyone worked with such focus and precision – I was extremely impressed! The finished products blew my socks off! It was lovely to see such a range of items brought into school too.

In music this week, we have been learning the song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. It was good fun moving to the beat, clapping, tapping and nodding along. We then displayed the lyrics and sang along as a class. We look forward to adding harmonies and accompanying instruments next half-term.

We hope you all have a lovely break next week and stay safe.

Best wishes,

Mr Prince and Miss Mather

Friday 11th February

11th February 2022 By matthewprince

Good morning everyone.

This week in RE we finished off our ‘Sources’ topic. The children have really enjoyed learning about the Bible and practising their referencing skills to find their favorite stories. We have put some information posters in the Year Six windows so if you are interested, please read them. We also enjoyed a wonderful worship which was led by Ellie and Holly this week. I was extremely impressed by the calmness and attitude of everyone – well done Year Six!

In Science, we have been learning about the circulatory system. This week, the children worked in teams to match the pictures to names and definitions. Next, the children split off into different groups and wrote song or rap lyrics to help them remember the names of different parts of the circulatory system and what job they do. We aren’t quite finished yet but we hope that next week all songs will be completed with accompanying music.

In Geography, we have been learning about the Arctic, the Antarctic, the equator, the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. First the children labelled a map with the key words provided. After this, we worked together to decide which facts were about the Arctic, which were about the Antarctic and which facts were true for both. Our resident experts Mark and Hugh were brilliant at this! Finally, the children were given a table of information about the daylight hours in each month in London, the Arctic and the Antarctic. They used this information to create three bar charts to visually display their work. Here are some fantastic examples from: Ellie, Madeleine, Harry, Isabel and Matthew.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Best wishes,

Mr Prince and Miss Mather
